In 1986 Bill Pope was named the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Northside High School. Previously he was the JV coach at Northside High School from 1980 – 83, the Head Coach of Powhatan High in 1983-84, and the JV coach at Salem High School 1984 – 86. Coach Pope is now entering his 45th year of coaching high school basketball and 39th as the head coach of Northside High School. Northside teams have won 17 District Championships, 8 Regional Championships and have had 18 State Tournament appearances, culminating in 648 games won, including 3 State Championships, 2019, and back-to-back in 2023 and 2024. He has received recognition as the Coach of the Year at the District, Regional and State levels. Coach Pope was a History and Government teacher for 43 years in the classroom, primarily teaching AP Government and AP US History. Currently, he teaches online classes for Roanoke County schools. He played 4 years of High School basketball and was a 1976 graduate of Mount Vernon HS in Northern Virginia. He earned a BA degree in History and Political Science at Bridgewater College where he also played 4 years of college basketball. He and his wife Patty have 4 daughters: Cassidy, Callie, Kelsey and Karlie. They currently have 6 grandsons and six granddaughters.
